Diwali, the most important holiday of the year for Indians around the world. The festival gets its name from the row(avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects us from spiritual darkness. This festival is as important to Hindus as the Christmas holiday is to Christians.
Hindus interpret the Diwali story based upon where they live:
One common thread rings true—they all symbolise the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, hope over despair.
Indians celebrate Diwali with family gatherings, glittering clay lamps, festive fireworks, strings of electric lights, bonfires, flowers, sharing of sweets, and worship to Goddess Lakshmi. Some believe that Goddess Lakshmi wanders the Earth looking for homes where she will be welcomed. People open their doors and windows and light lamps to invite Goddess Lakshmi in.
The one of the most important aspects of Diwali is that it brings friends and families together on this special day to celebrate with full joy and happiness. People go over the top to decorate their houses with lights and rangolis. This is the day when everyone waits to open up their gifts like people in the west wait for their Christmas presents.
